<p>Bringing together artists, designers, writers, filmmakers and more, the event offered a relaxed and welcoming space for ESEA creatives across Scotland to connect, share ideas, and build community. From casual chats to creative collaborations, it was a vibrant evening full of inspiration and solidarity.</p>

<p>The We Are Here For You project is run by Mongol Identity SCIO, an organisation dedicated to supporting and uplifting Scotland’s diverse communities by nurturing community spirit and celebrating cultural pride through inclusive events, shared initiatives, and opportunities for collaboration and connection.</p>
<p>MilkTea showcases the best of East and Southeast Asian cinema in the UK. Their work begins with screenings but extends far beyond, striving to build inclusion, communities, and audiences across the country.</p>

<p data-start="698" data-end="905">Her journey began in 2009, when she first encountered the discriminatory misuse of the word &#8220;Mongol&#8221; in French-speaking societies. Instead of turning away, she leaned in with research, education, and action.</p>
<p data-start="907" data-end="1225">In 2013, she founded the Mongolia-Canada Association, building bridges of understanding between cultures and working to reclaim and protect the dignity of the word <em data-start="1071" data-end="1079">Mongol</em>. She has long advocated for the respectful use of the term, emphasizing its rightful connection to the people, language, and culture of Mongolia.</p>
<p data-start="1227" data-end="1677">Since 2015, Dr. Bold has worked with the Mongol Identity team to lead global efforts against the misuse of terms like m<em data-start="1345" data-end="1356">ongolism</em>, m<em data-start="1358" data-end="1369">ongoloid</em>, and m<em data-start="1375" data-end="1386">ongolien</em>—especially in medical and linguistic contexts. She has played a key role in advocating for corrections in dictionaries and educational materials, and has spoken on global platforms including the United Nations and UNESCO, where she continues to champion cultural accuracy and policy change.</p>
<p data-start="1679" data-end="1816">Now, as Director, Dr. Bold will lead Mongol Identity into its next chapter: one focused on education and global outreach.</p>

<p>Nous sommes fiers et ravis d’accueillir Dre Zolzaya Bold en tant que nouvelle directrice de Mongol Identity « Identité Mongole ».</p>
<p>Dre Zolzaya apporte à ce rôle une expertise approfondie, une passion sincère et de nombreuses années de militantisme de terrain. Basée à Montréal, au Canada, elle est enseignante, titulaire d’un doctorat en éducation, et autrice de plusieurs ouvrages, notamment:</p>
<p>Le Dictionnaire illustré mongol-français, Apprenons le français avec Zaya et ses amis, Guide de conversations pour le voyage, Bienvenue en Mongolie.</p>
<p>Son parcours a débuté en 2009, lorsqu’elle a été confrontée pour la première fois à l’usage discriminatoire du mot « Mongol » dans les sociétés francophones. Plutôt que de détourner le regard, elle s’est engagée — par la recherche, l’éducation et l’action.</p>
<p>En 2013, elle fonde l’Association Mongolie-Canada, tissant des ponts entre les cultures et œuvrant à la réhabilitation et à la protection de la dignité du mot Mongol. Elle milite depuis longtemps pour une utilisation respectueuse de ce terme, en soulignant son lien légitime avec le peuple, la langue et la culture de la Mongolie.</p>
<p>Depuis 2015, Dre Zolzaya collabore avec l’équipe de Mongol Identity pour mener des efforts mondiaux contre l’usage inapproprié de termes tels que mongolisme, mongoloïde et mongolien — en particulier dans les contextes médicaux et linguistiques. Members involved in the event include Pachedu, The African Caribbean Asian and Mixed Heritage Association (ACAMHA Highland), Mongol Identity SCIO, West Lothian Community Race Forum, Glasgow Afghan United, African Women’s Group Scotland and the African Scottish Development Organisation. The DGGC works within Scotland’s International Development Alliance (SIDA), a network of over 200 organisations in Scotland who are committed to achieving a fairer world for all.</span></p>

<div dir="auto">We are honoured to speak at the United Nations, Geneva today. The topic was addressing the historical term &#8216;mongolism&#8217; in different languages and we put forward cases specifically in French speaking countries as examples.</div>

<div dir="auto">Je suis très contente et reconnaissante d&#8217;avoir l&#8217;occasion de faire entendre ma voix auprès de l’ONU aujourd&#8217;hui.</div>
<div dir="auto">C’est quand je suis arrivée au Québec (Canada), en 2009, que j&#8217;ai commencé à ressentir l&#8217;usage péjoratif du terme mongol qui, en français, est utilisé pour insulter, humilier et dévaloriser des personnes. J&#8217;ai entendu dire que les Mongols étaient confrontés à des problèmes similaires par le monde.</div>
<div dir="auto">En voici des exemples :</div>
<div dir="auto">Des enfants Mongols n&#8217;osent pas dire qu&#8217;ils sont mongols. Ils confient à leurs parents que quand ils disent qu&#8217;ils sont Mongols, les autres élèves rient d&#8217;eux en leur disant qu&#8217;ils sont des idiots. Cette situation génère des inconvénients à l&#8217;école. Pour cela ils refusent d&#8217;y dire qu&#8217;ils sont Mongols; ils préfèrent y dire qu&#8217;ils sont Japonais, Chinois, Coréens ou originaire d&#8217;un autre pays asiatique. Quand l&#8217;enfant mongol est discriminé, qu’il a honte de son origine, qu’il est méprisé, qu’il est victime d&#8217;intimidation, qu’il subit une pression émotionnelle et en vient aux bagarres et à d’autres actes de violence.</div>
<div dir="auto">À l&#8217;école élémentaire, au collège et à l&#8217;université, il arrive que des enseignants suggèrent à des Mongols des choses de la sorte: &#8220;Ne dis pas que tu es Mongol, dis plutôt que tu es venu de la « Mongolie ». Cela afin que les étudiants évitent de s&#8217;identifier et de se définir par le terme « Mongol ».</div>
<div dir="auto">Les adultes Mongols confirment aussi qu&#8217;ils entendent souvent les autres se moquer de leur origine.</div>
<div dir="auto">Les présentateurs, les animateurs, les chroniqueurs, les chanteurs ainsi que les acteurs dans tous leurs médias respectifs, utilisent souvent le terme mongol pour insulter, humilier ou dévaloriser les individus désignés.</div>
<div dir="auto">Personnellement, je me suis sentie idiote en disant « Je suis Mongole » dans la garderie où je travaillais. Une enseignante québécoise s’est moquée de moi lorsque je me suis identifiée comme Mongole.</div>
<div dir="auto">En tant que mère je suis sensible aux impacts sur mes enfants : ma fille regardait la télévision et m’a demandé pourquoi les gens s&#8217;y disent pour s&#8217;insulter : « Espèce de mongol! Tu es mongol! » etc.</div>
<div dir="auto">J&#8217;ai créé l&#8217;Association Mongolie-Canada en 2013 pour présenter la Mongolie, sa langue et sa culture ainsi que le sens original du mot mongol au Canada.</div>

<div dir="auto">Dans les dictionnaires français:</div>
<div dir="auto">Mongol (e) adjectif: concerne les habitants de la Mongolie, la langue mongole. Mongolien (ne), mongolisme- une personne ayant Trisomie 21 (le syndrome de Down).</div>
<div dir="auto">Dans l&#8217;expression québécoise, mongol signifie une personne stupide et/ou qui ne sait rien faire. En tant qu&#8217;enseignante à l&#8217;école, j&#8217;observe que beaucoup de personnes utilisent ce mot de manière péjorative. Il faut corriger la situation en rectifiant les termes mongolisme, mongolien dans les dictionnaires.</div>

<div dir="auto">Dans la Déclaration universelle des droits de l&#8217;homme, l&#8217;article 26.2 établit que l&#8217;éducation doit viser au plein épanouissement de la personnalité humaine et au renforcement du respect des droits de l&#8217;homme et des libertés fondamentales. Elle doit favoriser la compréhension, la tolérance et l&#8217;amitié entre toutes les nations et tous les groupes raciaux ou religieux, ainsi que le développement des activités des Nations Unies pour le maintien de la paix.</div>
<div dir="auto">Au vu de ces exemples, dans un contexte où les termes renvoyant à leur identité sont majoritairement compris comme dévalorisants, les enfants Mongols ne peuvent pas pleinement jouir de leurs droits fondamentaux tels que posés par la Déclaration universelle des droits de l’homme.</div>

<div dir="auto">This event aims to raise awareness about the negative impact of the historical term &#8220;mongolism&#8221; on people with Down syndrome and those from Mongol ethnic groups. We seek support from member states, the United Nations Human Rights Council, treaty-monitoring bodies, national human rights institutions, NGOs, and other stakeholders in combating hate speech and promoting inclusion, non-discrimination, and equality.</div>

<div dir="auto">As a grass root community organisation we witness the neglect of the most vulnerable people and their human and cultural rights in some of the most developed countries in the world.</div>

<div dir="auto">The word &#8220;Mongol&#8221; is used to discriminate, degrade, and ridicule people in some countries including the Netherlands, France, Canada, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Australia, and Mexico. Freedom of expression is abused on digital platforms to spread hatred, violence, and discrimination.</div>

<div dir="auto">We call on UN member states to take political leadership and concrete measures to review the use of the words &#8220;Mongol,&#8221; &#8220;mongolism,&#8221; and &#8220;mongoloid&#8221; in all contexts, including medical and social care settings. These words should be removed, eradicated, or correctly explained, and only used to refer to people of Mongol ethnic groups and their culture and language.</div>

<div dir="auto">Under the theme of the DS campaign &#8220;WithUsNotForUs,&#8221; we encourage the world DS community to normalize the word &#8220;Mongol&#8221; as a neutral term that refers to people of Mongol ethnicity. We also recommend educating medical and social care professionals and the wider community about the appropriate use of this word.</div>

Collaboration with MGL Running Channel

<p>On 21st March 2022, Mongol Identity representatives in the UK met Mongolian MPs Munkhtsetseg Tserenjamts, Ganbaatar Sainkhuu, Sukhbaatar Jamiyankhorloo, Ministry of Education and Science delegates Tamir Khujuu and Nomin Davaadorj who were on an official visit to the UK.<br class="html-br" /><br class="html-br" />Mongol Identity Director Uuganaa Ramsay, Education Consultant Dr Saranzaya Manalsuren, Information Technology Consultant Dr Anhbayar Otgonbayar and Project Manager Ganzorig Ulaankhuu delivered talks on UK Higher Education and Research. The event was organised in partnership with the Mongolian Embassy in the UK initiated by His Excellency Enkhsukh Battumur, the Ambassador of Mongolia to the UK.</p>

<p>Prise de position sur la chanson « L&#8217;odeur de l&#8217;essence » du rappeur français Orelsan</p>
<p>Le 17 novembre, le rappeur français Aurélien Cotentin – dit Orelsan – a sorti une chanson «L&#8217;odeur de l&#8217;essence» dans le cadre de son album Civilisation. La chanson compte déjà plus de 9 millions de vues sur YouTube et est pressentie pour remporter les &#8220;Prix de la musique du monde&#8221;. Orelsan a prévu une grande tournée à partir du 15 janvier 2022 en France, en Suisse et en Belgique. Il utilise à plusieurs reprises le mot « Mongol » de manière péjorative dans sa chanson. Le recours dévalorisant au terme &#8220;Mongol&#8221;, telle qu&#8217;il est présenté dans cette chanson, trouve ses racines dans les pseudo-sciences de la classification ethnique et de la phrénologie largement utilisée en Occident au XIXe siècle. John Langdon Down a utilisé ces approches lorsqu&#8217;il a classé les personnes atteintes du syndrome de Down comme «idiots mongols». Cette classification était basée sur sa conviction que les personnes atteintes du syndrome de Down partageaient les caractéristiques faciales des «mongoloïdes» &#8211; la classification ethnique développée en Occident pour décrire les personnes de Mongolie, de Chine, du Japon et du reste de l&#8217;Asie de l&#8217;Est. <p>Position statement on the song «L’odeur de l&#8217;essence» by French rapper Orelsan</p>
<p>On 17th November, French rapper Aurélien Cotentin – known as Orelsan – released a song «Odour of gasoline» as part of his album ‘Civilization’. The song already has over 9 million views on YouTube and is expected to be a contender to win the World Music Awards. Orelsan has a major tour planned from 15th January 2022 in France, Switzerland and Belgium. Orelsan repeatedly uses the word &#8216;Mongol&#8217; pejoratively in this song. This use has roots in the pseudoscience of ethnic classification and phrenology widely used in the West in the 19th Century. John Langdon Down used these approaches when he classified people with Down’s Syndrome as ‘Mongolian Idiots’. This classification was based on his belief that people with Down&#8217;s Syndrome shared the facial characteristics of the &#8216;Mongoloid&#8217; &#8211; the ethnic classification developed in the West to describe people from Mongolia, China, Japan and the rest of East Asia. Since the 1960s, organisations including the World Health Organisation and the United Nations have worked to eradicate the links between &#8216;Mongol&#8217; and &#8216;Down&#8217;s Syndrome&#8217; and to address the racist and ableist attitudes inherent in using the word as a synonym for &#8216;idiot&#8217;. When we heard L&#8217;odeur de l&#8217;essence, we were disappointed to hear repeated use of the word Mongol with the pejorative meaning established through the racist, colonial attitudes of the 19th Century. This was especially disappointing as this is a song that encourages us to break away from the errors of the past. The term Mongol, used in this manner, is offensive and insulting for the Mongols, their ethnic origins, their history, their dignity and even their very existence. ‘Mongol Identity SCIO’ is a non-profit charitable organisation which was established to challenge and change the pejorative uses of ‘Mongol’. Through education, it seeks to promote an understanding of Mongol culture and to address the racism and discrimination that underpins the use of ‘Mongol’ as an insult. In the spirit of discussion that the song aims for, Mongolian communities in different countries would very much like to work with French speaking communities to help break down the racism that people of Mongol origin face &#8211; and the discrimination that those with Down&#8217;s Syndrome also face &#8211; when the word is used as an insult. We are concerned that the French language has misappropriated the word ‘Mongol’ and our identity as Mongols. It is concerning to see that young people and pop culture have accepted this use as the norm. Orelsan has over 1.6 million followers and subscribers on social media. As such, he is an individual of influence. We believe that our voices must be heard and we must educate people and put an end to this misuse, especially considering that today &#8211; Friday 10th December 2021- is World Human Rights Day. Position statement – French Rapper Orelsan

<p>Mongol Identity aims to work with dictionary publishers to ensure that the definitions provided are clear and complete.</p>
<p><strong>If you hear someone described as a ‘mongol’, what is your first reaction? </strong></p>
<p>Do you assume that the person is from Mongolia? Or that the speaker is talking in derogatory terms about someone with Down’s syndrome? Or that it’s an insult hurled at someone who has done something stupid?</p>
<p>It was in the mid-1800s when Dr John Langdon Down attempted to describe the genetic condition that now carries his name. Down drew on two strands of pseudo-science prevalent in Europe at the time: ethnic classification, which attempted to delineate ‘races’ in terms of physical traits; and phrenology, which posited that the shape of a person’s head was an indicator of their character and intelligence.</p>
<p>He published a paper entitled ‘Observations on an Ethnic Classification of Idiots’ in 1866, coining the term ‘Mongolian Idiot’ to describe people born with Down’s syndrome, saying they shared the same facial characteristics of the ‘Mongoloid’, a 19th century racial classification which was applied to people from Mongolia, China and Japan.</p>
<p>The phrase passed into standard medical terminology. And so, the association between Mongol, Down’s syndrome and idiot was born. By the mid-20th century, it was widely recognised that this term was not only inaccurate but deeply insulting both to people with the genetic condition and to people from Mongolia.</p>
<p>A letter to The Lancet signed by eminent geneticists and physicians in 1961 proposed that the terms Mongolian idiocy, mongolism, and mongoloid, with their misleading racial connotations, be replaced by Langdon-Down anomaly or Down’s syndrome.</p>
<p>Soon, the World Health Organisation published the 8th Revision of International Classification of Diseases in 1965. The word mongol as a medical reference to people with Down’s syndrome was dropped.</p>
<p>In October 2020, Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen caused uproar when he called a rival a ‘mongol’. The social media response which followed showed that many had no idea why this use of the word was offensive and saw it merely as interchangeable for ‘idiot’.</p>
<p>There was little recognition that using the term as an insult is both deeply racist and discriminatory.</p>
<p>I am the founder of Mongol Identity, a UK-based non-governmental and non-profit organisation committed to ending the historical misuse of the term through education and awareness raising about the dignity, culture and tradition of people of Mongolian ethnicity.</p>
<p>Approaching the issue through education is critical.</p>
<p>People are often shocked when we explain the origin of the links between Mongol, Down’s syndrome and idiocy. They understand that it is derogatory to use mongol as an insult but they don’t know why.</p>
<p>Importantly, young people learn from what they hear, read and watch and our view is that the source needs to be addressed. Mongol Identity identifies one key source of this lack of understanding: dictionaries. When Max Verstappen made his comments, we found a lot of people on social media were saying ‘Mongol is in the dictionary and it means someone who is stupid or someone who has Down’s syndrome.</p>
<p>However, it’s important to recognise that ‘the dictionary’ doesn’t really exist as a single font of all knowledge. Dictionary content and definitions depend on the different compilers and publishers who create them. We see that dictionaries, even if they put a label saying ‘offensive’ on a definition, don’t provide enough information for people to make an informed choice about if or how they use the term. This is particularly true if they are dictionaries designed for learners in an age when we are all much more aware of racist and discriminatory language.</p>
<p>Mongol Identity aims to work with dictionary publishers to ensure that the definitions provided are clear and complete. We want publishers to consider what they put in their definitions. For example, if a dictionary is for language learners, is it really necessary to include a definition of mongol referencing Down’s syndrome as this is archaic?</p>
<p>If it is seen as necessary, we need to make sure that the definitions provide enough information to ensure the dictionary users understand just how offensive, discriminatory and racist these uses are.</p>
<p>In response to our letter, the Oxford University Press said: “All of our dictionaries are driven by evidence of how language is used in daily life, taken from a vast range of real life sources. “Having reviewed the evidence for the words ‘mongol’, ‘mongoloid’, and ‘mongolism’, we have decided to remove the terms from the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary.</p>
<p>The entry for Mongol – with a capital M – will however remain online and within the print edition, where it appears in the appendix of geographical names in reference to people of Mongol origin and the culture.</p>
<p>We can use the word Mongol in its original and authentic meaning, so that we can all exercise our human rights that are equal in dignity.</p>

<p><em>Uuganaa Ramsay is the founder and director of Mongol Identity. She is an award-winning author, campaigner and advocate. Born in Mongolia and now living in Scotland, she started writing and campaigning in 2010 after the death of her son, Billy, who had Down’s syndrome. Uuganaa won the Scottish Asian Women’s Award for Achievement Against All Odds in 2014.
