Breathe Mongolia – Clean Air Coalition

Dr. Ganmaa Davaasambuu is an assistant professor at Channing Division of Network Medicine, Department of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Department of Nutrition at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women Hospital, Boston, MA. She is a member of Advisory Committee, the Nutrition and Global Health Concentration Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, faculty representative for Dean’s Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Capstone faculty advisor for Global Clinical Scholars Research Training, Harvard Medical School. Her educational background includes a medical degree at National Medical University of Mongolia, followed by a residency in neurology jointly offered through National Institute of Medicine and Health Sciences University of Mongolia. She was awarded Japanese government scholarship and obtained her doctor of philosophy in medical sciences at Yamanashi Medical University in Japan. She completed her postdoctoral training at the Department of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health and was selected as Radcliffe Fellow 2017 at Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. Her research focus is on nutrients, including vitamin D, and infectious disease and bioactive substance in food and hormone-dependent cancers. To date, Professor Ganmaa has authored peer-reviewed publications and provided graduate training to over 70 graduate students and 27 pre-doctoral students. Prof. Ganmaa serves in numerous societies, organizations and is a member of the editorial board for ISRN Nutrition.

Jack McIver Weatherford is the former DeWitt Wallace Professor of anthropology at Macalester College in Minnesota. He is best known for his 2004 book, Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World. In 2006, he was awarded the Order of the Polar Star, Mongolia’s highest national honor for foreigners.
His books in the late 20th century on the influence of Native American cultures have been translated into numerous languages. In addition to publishing chapters and reviews in academic books and journals, Weatherford has published numerous articles in national newspapers to popularize his historic and anthropological coverage of Native American cultures, as well as the American political culture in Congress in the 20th century. He has become a frequent commentator on TV and radio.

Ganpurev Dagvan is a Mongolian composer, musician, and throat singer. Ganpurev is a horse head fiddle player and producer for Altai Band. He also founded the Agui o2 Auditorium and is a music director at the Mongolian Music Agency.

Bayra Bela is a Mongolian actress who studied her Masters in Acting for Screen at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, as a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship. She is a member of the Hollywood Professional Association and strives to promote Mongolian culture and film to the international community, as both a producer and an actress. With more than ten years of experience in modeling, Bayra Bela has represented Mongolia at world-leading beauty pageants such as Miss International 2014 and Miss Earth 2015. She has made historic success for her country in 2016, finishing in the Top 11 finalists and winning both the Miss Talent and People's Choice Awards at the Miss World pageant in Washington D.C.

Christopher P. Atwood (PhD 1994, Indiana University) is a professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches the history of Mongolia and the Inner Asian borderlands of China.

Bolortsetseg Minjin is a paleontologist who focuses on the protection of fossils in her native country, Mongolia. She received her Ph.D. from a joint program between the American Museum of Natural History and the City University of New York. Shortly afterwards, she founded the Institute for the Study of Mongolian Dinosaurs, which has discovered new fossil species, sponsored and trained Mongolian graduate students in paleontology and geology, and inspired children in the Gobi Desert through on-site educational programs. In 2012, she helped stop the sale of an illegally collected skeleton of Tyrannosaurus bataar from Mongolia, and coordinated the repatriation, return, and exhibition of this specimen. She also worked with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to reveal and shut down the majority of a vast illegal market of Mongolian fossils. She spearheaded the return of over 30 stolen dinosaurs to Mongolia and returned to help establish the Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs. Among the honors she has received are a 2009 Earth Award from Wings WorldQuest, a 2010 Emerging Explorer from National Geographic, a 2013 Polar Star from the Mongolian government and a 2017 the Raymond M. Alf Award for Excellence in Paleontological Research and Education from the Alf Musem of Paleontology. Her latest project involves creating a dinosaur conservation park that includes the Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag) and Tugrugiin shiree in Mongolia. Dr. Bolortsetseg is also the Executive Director at the American Center for Mongolian Studies.

Dr. Saruul-Erdene Myagmar is a linguist based in Arlington, VA. He has a Ph.D in linguistics and taught Modern Mongolian Morphology and the History of Mongolian language at the Mongolian State University of Education. He has published about 10 books on linguistics, Mongolian poetry translations, and Mongolian studies. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Mongolia Society, the American Center for Mongolian Studies, and founded the Mongolian Cultural Center in Arlington, VA. He also worked at the United States State Department's Foreign Service Institute as a Mongolian language and culture instructor. Dr. Saruul-Erdene currently works as a cataloger of Mongolian books in the Library of Congress, USA."

The word "Mongol" has been distorted for many years. Our campaign focuses on the need to bring about a greater understanding of the word in its true sense – referring to people of Mongol ethnicity and the language and culture of the people.

Definition. Broadly defined, the term includes the Mongols (also known as the Khalkha Mongols), Buryats, Oirats, the Kalmyk people and the Southern Mongols. In the thirteenth century, the word Mongol grew into an umbrella term for a large group of Mongolic-speaking tribes united under the rule of Chinggis Khaan.
